"This is our second year in a row with Captain Rick, and I am so excited to go next year! He is awesome, a lot to fun to talk to, and we had a great time. The first mates are fantastic and we caught a lot of fish thanks to them. My 13 year old daughter came with me, and she said I would drive 24 hours just to do this for 1 day, and that proves to me how much fun it is being on captain Rick's boat/ The Sea Horse." - Coates
"Captain Rick and David were awesome! Son's 16th birthday deep sea fishing trip was a success! Rough seas but was still a great time and caught quite a few meals! Thank you gentlemen for a great experience!" - Leeann
Blackfin Tuna: These speedy torpedoes are a favorite among anglers for their hard fights and delicious meat. Blackfins typically range from 15 to 30 pounds, but they punch well above their weight class when it comes to battling on the line. They're often found in schools, so when you hook one, there's a good chance more are nearby. Late spring through fall is prime time for blackfins off Islamorada, and they make for some of the best sashimi you'll ever taste.
Atlantic Sailfish: The rock stars of the billfish world, sailfish are known for their incredible acrobatics when hooked. These speedsters can hit 70 mph in short bursts and are famous for their spectacular leaps and tail-walks across the water's surface. Winter and early spring are peak seasons for sailfish in our waters. While we practice catch-and-release for these beauties, the photo ops with a lit-up sailfish are second to none.
Blue Marlin: The holy grail for many offshore anglers, blue marlin are the stuff of legends. These massive predators can top 1,000 pounds, though fish in the 200-400 pound range are more common in our area. Hooking into a blue marlin is like being strapped to a freight train - it's an experience you'll never forget. They're most often encountered in the warmer months, from late spring through early fall.
Mahi Mahi (Dorado): Also known as dolphin fish, these colorful speedsters are a favorite for both their fighting ability and their delicious, flaky white meat. Mahi are known for their vibrant blue-green and yellow coloration, which fades quickly after they're landed. They often travel in schools, so finding one can lead to multiple hookups. Spring and summer are prime time for mahi, and they're a staple for many of our trips.
Greater Amberjack: Often called "reef donkeys" for their bullish strength, amberjack are the bruisers of the deep. These powerful fish hang around wrecks and reefs, and when hooked, they head straight back to their structure in an attempt to break you off. The fight with an AJ is often a battle of pure strength. They're available year-round but tend to be more prevalent in the cooler months.
Wahoo: If you're looking for speed, wahoo are your fish. These streamlined predators are among the fastest fish in the sea, capable of short bursts up to 60 mph. They're known for their blistering initial runs and their razor-sharp teeth that can slice through heavy leader. Wahoo meat is highly prized for its delicate flavor and firm texture. While they can be caught year-round, winter and early spring often see the best wahoo action off Islamorada.
Look, if you're itching for some world-class fishing action without having to dedicate a full day, this half-day trip with Sea Horse Deep Sea Fishing is your golden ticket. Captain Rick and his mate David were great and took good care of us. We did a half day and they knew how to find the fish. We caught a few good Mahi and they cleaned them up and filleted them so we can have a local restaurant cook it for us. Great conversation with Captain Rick as he was friendly and welcoming. My 15year old son had a blast as this was his birthday present and my 10 year old son also had a good time. Highly recommend Sea Horse Private Charters!

Atlantic sailfish are the showstoppers of our waters. These acrobatic fish average 6-8 feet long and put on a spectacular aerial display when hooked. You'll find them in the deeper waters off Islamorada, especially along current edges and temperature breaks. Winter is prime sailfish season here, with peak action from December through March. Anglers come from all over to tangle with these bucket-list fish, prized for their fighting spirit and stunning looks. To up your odds, we often slow-troll live baits like goggle-eyes or ballyhoo. One trick is to use light leader - these fish have great eyesight. When a sail shows up in the spread, get ready for some heart-pounding action as it lights up and starts greyhounding across the surface.

Blackfin tuna are the smallest of the tuna family, but don't let that fool you. These little powerhouses usually run 15-30 pounds and put up a serious fight. You'll find them in the warm waters around Islamorada, often hanging out near reefs or weedlines. Best fishing is typically from July through November when they're feeding heavily. Anglers love targeting blackfin for their aggressive strikes and tasty meat. To boost your chances, try slow-trolling live bait like pilchards or ballyhoo. A local trick is to chum heavily to get them fired up, then cast into the frenzy with light tackle. Just be ready for some smoking runs - these guys can really rip some line!

Blue marlin are the heavyweight champions of our offshore waters. These massive fish can top 1,000 pounds, though we usually see them in the 200-400 pound range. You'll find them in the deep blue waters beyond the reef, often following bait schools. Summer and early fall are prime time, with August and September being peak months. Anglers dream of hooking into one of these giants for the fight of a lifetime. Blues are known for their incredible power and stamina - battles can last hours. We typically troll large lures or rigged baits at a good clip to entice a strike. If you're lucky enough to hook up, be ready for some serious work. One local tip: when a blue goes deep, don't be afraid to put the heat on. Sometimes you've got to bully these fish up before they wear you out.

Greater amberjack are the bulldogs of the reef. These powerful fish average 20-40 pounds but can top 100. You'll find them around deep wrecks and reefs, typically in 100-300 feet of water. Spring and fall are prime seasons, though we catch them year-round. Anglers love AJs for their brute strength - they're pound-for-pound one of the hardest fighting fish out there. We usually drop large live baits or heavy jigs to get their attention. Once hooked, be ready for a serious battle. These fish head straight for structure, so you've got to turn them quick. A local tip: when an AJ digs in, try short, powerful rod pumps instead of just grinding. Sometimes you can throw off their rhythm and gain some line.

Mahi mahi are the perfect gamefish - beautiful, acrobatic, and delicious. These colorful fighters usually run 10-30 pounds around here, with some bulls pushing 50+. You'll find them offshore, often near floating debris or weedlines. Mahi fishing is good year-round, but really heats up in summer. Anglers love targeting them for their wild aerial displays and excellent table fare. To get on the mahi, we'll run-and-gun, looking for birds or floating structure. Once we find them, it's often fast action. A local trick is to keep a hooked fish in the water to hold the school close. Light tackle and small lures work great. Just be ready for some crazy jumps and blistering runs when you hook up!

Wahoo are the speed demons of the ocean. These sleek predators can hit 60 mph and put on blistering runs. They average 20-40 pounds here, but 100-pounders aren't unheard of. You'll find them in the deep blue water beyond the reef, often near dropoffs or current edges. Fall through spring is prime wahoo time, with winter being the peak. Anglers love targeting them for their blazing speed and excellent eating quality. We usually troll at a good clip, around 8-12 knots, using wire leaders to prevent bite-offs. A local trick is to use a planer to get lures deeper where big wahoo often lurk. When one hits, hang on tight - that first run is like hooking a rocket!
